Ancillary Task Planning - CD Digipack

As I've now completed the filming for my music video; I am contemplating my digipack photography more carefully. I want to use my favourite bits from all my research into CD covers, therefore I have decided to shoot outside and include an unknown model (as seen on A Day To RememberAll Time Low and Maroon 5's albums). I think this idea would link in well with my music video as I would shoot in the same location as my video and dress my model in a sureal / fairy type outfit to connote fantasy / reality (like my video) and also containing interxtuality relating to Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream; which is all about love, giving my audience an idea as to what sort of songs will be played on the album.

Ancillary Task Research - CD Covers - The Last Shadow Puppets

The Last Shadow Puppets are an alternative band. Like All time Low and Mayday Parade they have iconographised a particular font to represent them; this proves that I too should consider doing something similar for the front cover of my digipack task and my poster. I really like how basic this cover is, the minimalistic black and white effect draws the eye to the cover as it differs from the normal types of albums sold in shops. The position of the girl in the frame is also well thought out, by placing her there we read the band name and album name first, then get an idea as to the sort of music played by the mise en scene of the girl's clothing.

Filming - Performance Shoot

This afternoon Ben & I managed to film the performance element to my video, and I'm really pleased with the shots we got, especially seeing as we had limited time. Even though I strayed slightly from the original storyboard due to problems with one of the locations being used, I took a wide variety of shots from various angles in different locations and have undoubtably got enough to have my pick of shots. We didn't manage to film all of the shots with guitar playing though, as it proved to be very challenging to sing in time and play the song together, however, I don't think it's a major problem and all together I'm really happy with how it went. We got about three takes with the guitar and two without the whole way through, then took loads of the first half and the last half of the song respectively to incorporate all the angles on my storyboard.

Planning - Performance Shoot

Tuesday is my performance shoot; so I looked up weather for the day. Unfortuately, it looks to be quite cloudy, with a slight chance of rain. If this is the case, I will need to rethink my locations, and will most probably have to film in a room with a plain background and use props such as candles to add an atmoshere, or use an umbrella to protect the filming equipment. However, hopefully, because we're filming at the warmest point of the day it'll be fine. I have provided Ben with lyrics and a chord sheet as well as a copy of the Prop List. Tonight I'll devise a time schedule all ready for Tuesday.

Planning - Intertextual Reference

I was thinking about including a vertical intertextual reference within my ancillary task, and came up with the idea of using William Shakespeare's 'A Midsummer Night's Dream' to inspire my front CD cover. My model will be dressed in a neutral, floaty dress and floral headband and will be looking to the sun, connoting the fairy queen from the famous play, the location would be a light, forest, coloured to look like a dreamworld. Midsummer Night's Dream deals with fantasy / reality , not disimilar to my music video, hence the two would link nicely.

Research - Pink - Perfect

Today I was looking on youtube for videos to inspire my performance shoot next week. I discovered Pink's 'F***in perfect, which uses Barthe's cultural codes to symbolise the re-occurance of youth and innocence during hard times (done using a teddy bear). I have the idea of using a symbolic code of romance lost within my own A2 production; the rose, which will be the only colour thing within my sepia scenes connotes lost love and a death of romance.

Planning - Reschedule Performance Shoot

Today, Ben and I were discussing Sunday's shoot, and a problem arose. As we both live in incredibly remote areas we were relying on parents to give lifts to and from the location; both of our parents are away on this date, hence ruining our plan. For this reason, we are going to film on Tuesday after school, hopefully before it gets dark. This will be difficult, as we only have a 2 hour time slot, but I am confident that with a carefull scheudle we'll easily manage it.

Theory Research - The Representation of Gender in You Me At Six's Videos (Introduction).

I have chosen to do this research task primarily because I am creating my final piece to their song 'Finders Keepers' and also because they are a personal favourite band of mine. Throughout the remainder of this year I will be investigating You Me At Six's target audience and their views upon gender representation in three of the principal You Me At Six videos. Their first one, 'save it for the bedroom', their most popular (in terms of most bought and also closest to my song in terms of genre), 'stay with me', and their most recent, 'Bite My Tongue'. This will also allow me to see whether the representation of gender has changed and evolved over a period of time.

Editing - Importing Films

Today I managed to import my narrative footage onto my mac ready for post-production, I also printed out lyrics for Ben for the performance shoot on Saturday. This means that next lesson I can start picking the narrative clips I want for my video and cutting them to suit my final piece.

Ancillary Task Research - Tour Posters - All Time Low

All Time Low are a pop-punk band similar to You Me At Six. I found this tour poster especially interesting because of the typography used. The band have used the same bold font each album / poster they released creating a brand identity - easy for their target audience to identify. Yellowcard, Hey Monday and The Summer Set have also done this, showing that it's a popular thing to do within my chosen genre and something I must consider when creating my own poster. The dark colours are also a common convention of the pop-rock genre and by placing the band in colour it attracts them as the main focus point of the poster.

Filming - Reflection on Narrative Shots

Now that I've made the necessary changes to my storyboard, I thought I should re-look at my footage and pick clips that I will definitely try to feature within my music video. Here are some stills from my favourite clips. I think these were effective because of the cinematography used, coupled with the fact that they're all portraying different concepts and therefore will keep hold of the audience's attention. I am especially pleased with how the burning clip turned out, even though I had reservations at first, I'm pleased I went with it because it's original, links in with my video's semic codes, and adds a visual aid to the meaning of the song. The swings are also a favourite of mine as I think the angle's really unique and therefore interesting for the viewer. Using the HD cameras was really useful as I could get a better quality of shot, hence meeting my audience's need by providing them with a professional looking end product.

Planning - Changes To Storyboard

So, after my narrative shoot on Friday, I realised that some of my storyboarded shots wouldn't work with the tempo of the song, nor did they look good on film, and I took some shots which turned out better than expected though I haven't made room for them within my storyboard. Today, I re-watched all my clips and decided which ones to put into the storyboard, and have decided to make the following changes to the narrative element of my final piece.

Changes to Narrative element of the storyboard:
  • Replacing the shot of Nick against the wall throwing the photo (0.33) with either long shot of characters fighting behind counter or through car windscreen or over table
  • Making the shot of Nick yelling down the phone a split screen, with Naomi yelling down her phone as the other side
  • Replacing the swinging phone cord with either Nick yelling in the car or the protagonists staring at eachother
  • No protagonist's mouths miming lyrics - to be replaced with either Nick storming out of the car or Nome against wall (or both on a split screen - to be decided in editing)
  • Swing shot to be changed to an extreame high angle (as this looked more professional)
  • Replacing the shot of the backs of the protagonist's heads with either a bubble shot or a cloud watching shot
  • No close up of Naomi's mouth miming lyrics, instead of this part of the screen - have either the bubble blowing or the cloudwatching
  • Replacing the smashed vodka bottle with a tracking shot of the counter filled with alcohol
  • Replacing the POV of characters miming lyrics to eachother with either Nick on his own on the same bench as the prior shot or another fighting shot (over table)
  • Replacing the slide shot with bubbles or cloudwatching or flower
  • Replacing splashing water over face with Nick looking out of window
  • Replacing girl running into shot with a happy shot
  • Then swapping Nick burning the photo with this happy shot (as it fits better with the ending this way)
I realise there are a fair amount of changes, however, I'm glad I recognised these before post-production, and they are mainly because I had far better shots of other things as opposed to the original ideas being wrong.

Ancillary Task Research - CD Inspiration

On blogging website tumblr I saw this photo posted by a young, 'indie' photographer, similar to my target demographic. I loved it, and think it fits my style of music perfectly, as it connotes an idealistic, nostaligic type world as well as linking in with my song, as parts of it are filmed on a bridge. However, it may be difficult to get permission to do this.

Ancillary Task Research - CD Covers - Maroon 5

This is Maroon 5's newest CD cover, which I think meets their target audience's needs very sucessfully. The plain colours don't adhear to any gender stereotypically, hence appealing to both boys and girls, as well as making the album name stand out. The image is also quite eye-catching as she has more hands than is possible, connoting the utopian fantasy of intensity and community, drawing people in & making them want to listen. However, I was thinking of interweaving the text and the image slightly more within my own ancillary task to create an interesting visual.

Filming - Example Shots from Narrative Shoot

This is another shot from my shoot Yesterday, it's a 'flashback' shot to the protagonists cuddling on the counter, which I filmed them arguing over hence creating an interesting juxtaposition. Like all the 'flashback style' clips, this will be in sepia and cut to be shorter, with no sound. In this shot, I love how the characters are framed, and the look of intensity on their faces, yet it all still looks quite cute and innocent.

Filming - Example Shots from Narrative Shoot

As yesterday was my narrative shoot, I thought I should upload a couple of the clips that I took to see how they looked on youtube and how they looked prior to post-production. This is a 'filler' shot of Naomi downing a drink, in which I really think the low angle mid-shot worked - it gives her power, but also makes the drink part of the main focus of the shot - connoting the effect of alcohol and it's hold on her life.

Filming - Narrative Shoot

Today was my narrative shoot with Nick and Naomi, and I feel it went really well. The weather was pefect for us, and I managed to get all the shots I needed (and then some more). By using and sticking to a fairly strict time schedule we shot 105 clips in about 4 hours, which is brilliant as now I have so much footage to play with in editing. Most of my shots were well framed and looked exactly how I'd envisioned, probably due to my storyboarding prior to the date. However, I am going to have to make some small adjustments to my storyboard. The slide scene didn't work at all as I'd hoped, and so I will replace this with either the shot of blowing bubbles, presenting her with a rose or cloud-watching as these clips looked particularly effective on film. Now I am going to narrow down my footage to about 40 clips, which I will then import into Final Cut ready for post-production. Another problem I had was synching one line of the song to the protagonist's mouths, however, I think I have enough decent footage to change this and still have it look good and fit with the conventions better. Altogether, it was a really good day for filming, and I got all I need done.

Planning - Performance Shoot Date Planned

I have agreed with Ben to film his performance next Sunday, this way the location's will be a lot quieter and we'll have the whole day before it gets dark outside. Tomorrow, I'm bringing him in the chords and the lyrics, as well as the mp3 of the track so that he can fully learn the song by the set date; allowing for my synchronisation to hopefully be spot on. By filming both elements of my piece early on it allows me more time to edit and make sure everything looks exactly how I want. It also gives me time to re-shoot any needed footage.

Ancillary Task Research - CD Covers - A Day To Remember

This is the album for rock band 'A Day To Remember'. I love the use of dystopia shown within the text, the dark colours signify social tension, inadequacy and isolation. However, it wasn't the dark colours which attracted me to this cover, it was actually the bright white font coupled with the ambiguous figure. This creates an air of mystery around the album and will encourage the audience to listen to the album. Something I'll definitely use within my 'promo-pack', although without the dark colour scheme to fit the mystery with the genre.

Planning - Timing List For Narrative Shot

As tomorrow is my narrative shoot, I have complied a list of all the shots that I need, for the utopia / dystopia and 'fillers'. This will make my day run more smoothly and hopefully ensures that everyone knows exactly what they're doing. I have also placed these shots into a logical order, by grouping them as to where they will be shot - outdoor (by the bridge / bench / field) / indoor (bedroom / bathroom / living room) or 'filler' type shots.

10:15 - Arrive at location for the outside shots

Planning - Indoor Location Spec.

These are the rooms which I am going to use to film my indoor shots for the video; I selected them due to their neutural colour schemes (see my research on indoor locations) and the fact that they're easy to access and well lit.
By choosing this mirror in a white room it could symbolise the protagonist's empty feelings, it's also placed nicely so that I can film her both from profile and behind her. The kitchen is where my fight will be taking place, I quite like having the doorframe in shot as the audience then feels as they're seeing 'behind closed doors' and adds authenticity to the fight, however, I'm also filming it from both character's points of view to get as much footage as possible. The sofa is for when the girl is passed out, and the stairs are a potential place to have the boy sitting to burn the photograph as I can easily get a POV shot and a profile shot, however, if this idea doesn't work out, I'll film him in the living room (with the sofa). For the telephone scene, the boy will be in the living room.

The Strangers - Reflection

Today we completed our short edit of 'It was a sin' and overall, although it's a little short, I don't think we did too badly. Our synchronisation was all in time, and we managed to use a good variety of shots. However, I think we could have used editing effects more cleverly - for instance feathering the edges of clips or changing the saturation / highlights and shadows in them to make them more aesthetically pleasing for the target audience, and allowing it to fit better into the 'indie / alternative' genre. This is definitely something I must bear in mind when editing my own footage as within the 'rock / indie / acoustic' genre, the look of the video is very important in relaying the message behind the song.

Planning - Outdoor Location Spec.

Yesterday I went around my location to take photos, so as to see how it looks on film. This was a vital part of my planning because it determined the amount of artifical light I would have needed to bring with me, as well as providing me with shot angles and sizes.

I really love how the forest looks, the old branches and moss on the bridge looks almost like a fairytale, idealic scene - perfect for my create of utopia as well as for the performance element. I think the way in which the sunlight catches the branches will take away any need for artifical lighting - which is useful as it's difficult to access, also, because it's a public location and I'll be filming during 'school hours' I don't need to request permission from anywhere. I also love the shot of the bench underneath the tree (left), which will be where I'll film another take of the performance.

Research - Rihanna - We Found Love

This contrasting utopia and dystopia created by Rihanna is really clever. Like myself, she uses the idea of flashbacks within a failing relationship. I like the colour levels in the video, they aren't quite fully coloured; showing dystopia and sadness - and contrasting with the genre of music. I also think the speaking at the beginning is particually effective, however, I don't know if it'd work within my own video because the song doesn't build up as this one does. The shot, which is viewed through the car windscreen is also something that I am replicating, because I think it distances the audience from the protagonists, adding a greater sense of tension between them.

Research - Location Ideas (Narrative)

Narrative is slighty harder to place into a set sort of location because I have two story-lines (the utopia and the dystopia) going on. However, I have decided that I'm going to base a fair amount of the utopia outside, in parks / benches / fields because the open space looks better on camera than my house, and it eliminates any major lighting issues as I will use natural light. Also, by having the cheerful narrative set outside, it connotes the idea of freedom, both within a relationship and mentally. Within my narrative, I recognise that I need some indoor shots to add realism, for which I am going to use simply coloured rooms so as not to detract from the action. The simple colored rooms could also show a lack of emotion between the protagonists. Luckily for me, a lot of the rooms in my house are plain colored, so I can easily do this.

Research - Location Ideas (Performance)

I have basic ideas as to a location, which have been inspired though my watching of music videos. I know that I want to set  some, if not most, of my performance outside as I feel it fits in with the acoustic vibe. Next to my house is a forest with pretty rivers and fields surrounding it, which would give me a lot of scope when it came to choosing where to place my performer. As seen in Rihanna's We found love, Adele's Someone like you and You Me At Six's Stay with me having a performance outside is popular with artists aiming at the same audience market as me. It's also a lot more practical as I don't have access to a professional recording studio. I also noticed, whilst watching these videos, that it's fairly commonplace to have the performer to the edge of the frame (see the pictures from Rihanna and Adele), in order to showcase the scenery, and make the songer look smaller. This is something I'll be trying in my own performance footage next week because I think it could add another dynamic to the video as a whole

Ancillary Task Research - CD Covers - The Script

The Script are a pop band, who are extreamly popular with my target audience. Therefore, I thought looking at their CD covers would be a wise idea to gain inspiration to meet my niche audience's needs. I really like the minimalistic design on the single cover, and the two hands play on the utopian pleasures idea of community and intensity - connoting that the songs on the album will adress these ideas. I like how (similar to the you me at six tour poster) there isn't a main person on the album, allowing more members of the target audience to relate. The hands used are a girls and a boys, connoting that the album is for both genders, but could also hint as to the content of the song.

The Strangers - Editing

In today's lesson we were editing 30 seconds worth of footage from the Stranger's gig. After reviewing the fottage we captured, we were all very happy with the shots; although we could have got some more innovative shots if we'd used a storyboard. We created our rough cut, using basic editing techniques such as fading clips and next lesson we're going to experiment with modifying the colour / saturation etc of the piece to see if we can make it look slightly more interesting.

Planning - Storyboard

Over the weekend, I worked on piecing together my final storyboard ready for Friday's shoot, which I'll be taking with me as it has shot directions and timings on it. I found storyboarding my ideas fairly challenging, as it had to fit with the beat of the song, and keep the audience's attention, as well as having a balence of narrative and performance, but I'm pleased with the outcome. During my narrative shoot, I think it would be wise to take more shots than I need, which would give me more footage just incase I need to fill gaps in the song / something goes wrong with the original idea.

Planning - Narrative Shoot Date Planned

As we have an inset day this Friday, and both Naomi and Nick are free, we thought this would be an excellent time to film. Firstly because we'll have the whole day, and therefore can take more footage and secondly because, during school hours, the location won't be so busy. Just to make sure that the weather wouldn't impact the day, I checked on BBC forecast, and luckily it all looks okay. Today I will provide my protagonists with shot lists / prop lists and storyboards, as well as a brief summary of the song, so that they know what we are trying to achieve on Friday.

Planning - Prop List For Performance Shoot

As I'm filming my performance footage next week, I thought devising a prop list would make the shoot go more smoothly, therefore saving time and allowing me to do more takes of the song with Ben. It also helped me to get my ideas together and let Ben know exactly what he needs to bring in plenty of time.

    Prop List (performance element)

Research - Jason Derulo - It Girl

These two stills from Jason Derulo's It Girl have inspired my 'romantic' storyline. I really like the left shot because of the silhouetted characters, and I think the framing is really nicely done as the audience attention is immediately on the protagonists. As for the second shot, I think it connotes intimacy really effectively, which has given me the idea of changing my kissing shot to one similar to this - simply because I feel it conveys love as opposed to lust.

Ancillary Task Research - CD Covers - Bombay Bicycle Club

Bombay Bicycle Club's album cover for 'I had the blues but I shook them loose' is, in my opinion, amazing. I think the clever use of blue to connote a relaxed setting really stands out on the black and white background. I also really like the character who seems to be on top of the text; however, I think it may be too hard to replicate in my ancillary task. I also love the outdoor setting with the blurred city landscape behind it, and the fact that the band aren't on the cover, like All Time Low's CD, making it more easy to relate to on the audience's behalf.

The Strangers - Practicing Performance Shots

Today, we had a professional band come into school so we could practice filming live performance, in preparation for the next few weeks.
The Strangers are an up-coming three piece indie band, containing a pianist, drummer and singer. They have three main songs ; it was a sin, chaos and if I found love. Our group selected one of these songs to create a short performance clip to.
I learnt a fair amount from this, principally about what looks good on film and what doesn't work so well, it also made me look at the performance side more creatively than before; encouraging me to experiment with different shot lengths and types whilst teaching me that it's best to get as many shots as you can. then you have a wider scope when it comes to post-production. It was also important to realise the amount of prepation that was needed just for a simple long shot and how, in reality, post-production and planning should last the longest, not filming. It was quite difficult to predict the movements of the band, however, my storyboard eliminates this issue.
All in all, it was a useful exercise to have done, and will hopefully really help me get some good performance shots for my final piece. Next lesson, our group will be editing our performance shots to their song 'It Was A Sin' (below).

    Planning - Shotlist

I have divided my shots into the narrative and performance. By taking this document on shoot with me, I'll more easily be able to know exactly what to do and therefore the day as a whole will go a lot smoother. Now I can devise my storyboard to make sure it incorporates all these ideas with some left over incase I need to make changes in the post-production stage.

    Performance
Profile shots of singer by river with guitar
Aerial shot of singer on mat with guitar next to him

Ancillary Task Research - CD Covers - The All-American Rejects

The All-American Rejects are a popular pop-rock band. This is one of their earlier album covers, and I still think it's one of the most effective. By using a simplistic colour scheme and not having too much attention on any one thing the audience spend more time taking in all the details. I like the use of bright white on the black background, which immediately captures attention. However, I'm not massively keen on the font choice, stylistically I think it presents the band to be more 'rock' than 'indie-pop-rock' and could lure in the wrong sort of target audience. I must remember the importance of font choice, because my song is technically 'acoustic-rock' so I need something to reflect that vibe. I love the use of utopian fantasy within the still, the amgibiguous characters look like they're a community, meeting the audience needs by connoting that every All American Reject fan has a place in society.

Research - Kids In Glass Houses - Undercover Lover

Kids In Glass Houses are a smiliar band in genre to You Me At Six, and I feel their video for this song uses some similar things to what I was thinking about. To start with, the song opens with an extreame close up on the performer, then goes into narrative later on, I definitely like the effect of this, I think it puts the audience on edge as they want to know what's going to happen. Also, I thought it looked really nice when the 'protagonists' sung part of the song as speech in the narrative, affirming my idea to do that.

    Planning - Organising Inital Ideas

Today, I got the lyrics for the song, and used them as a means to begin organising my ideas into some sort of logical order, ready for filming. I found this to be more challenging than anticipated, however, I feel I've managed to get across the message of the song, whilst staying true to the genre and keeping enough changes to the shots to keep the audience interested. Although these don't contain all the exact detail of the shots, they're a good place to start as now I can write up an ordered list of shots and storyboard them accurately.
